Green Lake #566 the Forest Service's write-up
season March to October
The Green Lake Trail #566 begins in Crested Butte at a parking area on Journey’s End Road and ends at Green Lake at the base of Mt. Axtell. The first part of the trail travels up several switchbacks through an aspen forest with beautiful wildflowers. After about 1.3 miles, a sign will direct you to follow Wildcat Trail Road for about 0.5 miles, another sign will direct you to continue on the trail. The trail is steep and can be rocky with several roots. It continues to climb through dark timber, eventually it opens up where it intersects the Carbon Trail #436. Stay straight at the intersection to reach Green Lake. Trout fishing can be good in Green Lake.

The lines are the US Forest Service's National Forest System trails layer (public domain), read 2026-10-16 and simplified for the map; the length is the line's, end to end, and the class, surface, grade and tread width are the forest's own entries where it publishes them - a forest that publishes the centreline alone has none. The trailheads and the points along the way are the Service's recreation points, and the write-ups its own recarea text, unedited. Heights come from USGS 3DEP through Terrain Tiles on AWS (Mapzen/Tilezen), read along each line and rounded; a short trail on steep ground can be off by a few tens of feet. Closures change: check the forest's own site before you go.
